How hot will this week's UK heatwave be?
Muggy nights will make for uncomfortable sleeping
What’s going on?
Later this week, a heatwave is set to develop across the UK. Whilst the highest temperatures will be focused across England and Wales, parts of Scotland and N. Ireland are likely to reach their heatwave threshold too.
How hot will it get?
On Saturday, temperatures will widely reach 27-32C across England and Wales, with Scotland and N. Ireland seeing 22-28C. Some coastal areas will be cooler than this, due to onshore breezes moderating the heat. Humidity will increase too, making for some muggy nights.
High pollen and UV levels
The hot, dry and sunny weather means that UV levels are set to be high. Bear in mind that UV levels aren’t dependent on temperature, so even if there’s a cooling breeze, you can still get sun burn. If you have hay fever, grass pollen levels will be high or very high for many.
How long will it last?
The heat looks likely to continue into the early part of next week - particularly across southern and eastern parts of the UK. However, cooler air may start to arrive from the west during Monday.
Thunderstorms and lightning over Europe
In my post yesterday, I mentioned that heavy rain and thunderstorms could bring some flooding across parts of central and eastern Europe in the coming days. Lightning strikes, shown below (via blitzortung.org), have already been seen across the region during Tuesday 8 July, with more expected this week.
