European heatwave continues and Hurricane Flossie forms
Also, England has hottest June on record
Heatwave continues across Europe
The intense heatwave continues across central and southern parts of Europe, with extreme heat warnings covering millions of people.
On Channel 4 News yesterday, I took a closer look at the heatwave, how unusual it is and what’s causing it to be so intense.
Hurricane Flossie forms
Hurricane Flossie has formed over the Eastern Pacific Ocean, parallel to the west coast of Mexico. It grew in strength yesterday (30th June) - as can be seen in the infrared satellite imagery below, courtesy of CSU/CIRA & NOAA.
At the time of writing, the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center keeps the hurricane offshore and tracking northwestwards. Even though the storm stays offshore, it will still bring some heavy rain along the Mexican coastline, along with rough seas.
Further and latest updates from the National Hurricane Center are available here.
June was hottest on record for England
The Met Office has confirmed that June was the hottest on record for England. For the UK as a whole, it ended up being the second-warmest June on record.
Climate change and the release of greenhouse gases continues to cause the UK’s climate to get warmer, with this trend mirrored for the month of June - increasing the frequency, intensity and duration of heatwaves.
I have written a longer read about the UK’s June weather on my Channel 4 News blog here.
